Designed for use with a large hanging trade sign, it features a sturdy cast ironwork fretwork piece with floral blossom ends and a scrolling pattern which is mounted securely into a channel in the side of a two piece wood column. Designed to mount onto the side of a building or in an archway, there are holes on each bracket end for securing to a wall - one end also has a metal tube filled with what looks like cement - this runs down through the wood column to further stabilize the piece and the tube appears to be copper - it was probably inserted into the actual building when originally hung. Dating to around the 1880s or 1890s, ironwork has paint loss and patina from age - wood has finish loss and lots of wear - metal bracket that mounts into the wood has surface rust on one end - there are no breaks or missing pieces to the fretwork. I've used this for years to display some of my trade signs - I would hang the metal rod end and the bracket end with chain loops and it worked great - gave the signs wonderful presentation and really made them stand out. Heavy, sturdy and solid, this is a really nice antique sign bracket. Nice addition to any trade sign collection with a wonderful folk art quality!
