It’s a reproduction of an original set featuring the very popular “Arabic” pattern made by “Mallory Wheeler Co.” during the 1880’s. The set itself is old, but it’s not antique. Over the years, it developed a beautiful patina, which we touched up a bit. The set consists of 2 bronze knobs, 1 bronze escutcheon with swinging keyhole cover, 1 bronze rosette, 1 bronze keyhole cover, 1 mortise lock with bronze faceplate, 1 working key, and 1 spindle with 2 set screws. All bronze parts are solid, heavy cast bronze—not stamped or plated iron. We found the set without a keyhole cover; the plate included with this set is one we added. It is antique and was made by “P.F. Corbin” circa 1895. All bronze parts, except for the keyhole cover, feature rippling water and Arabic symbols. It’s truly a spectacular, one-of-a-kind design. All parts are in excellent shape with no breaks, cracks, chips, or heavy scratches. Someone removed the switch on the faceplate of the lock, and as a result the function controlled by the upper keyhole is disabled. The switch was intended to freeze and unfreeze the upper, passage latch, which acted as a secondary deadbolt. However, that is not an important feature today, because most entry doors are secured primarily by a modern deadbolt lock. Although the photos show the set with 2 keys, only 1 key is included (since the upper keyhole function has been disabled). Our photographer wasn’t aware of the missing switch, and figured someone simply forgot to make a second key for it. He added the first key that fit, and took the photos thinking a key would be made for the upper keyhole before shipping. However, we could make more keys to operate the lower deadbolt latch for a charge of $5/key.
