Description
Excellent example of 18th C. Suffolk latch, familiar type characteristic of the Housatonic Valley, and so called "tulip" design. Flat thumb press with curved lift. Pennsylvania workers also occasionally made use of this motif. Outstanding condition for its age, no breaks, cracks, repairs, excellent patina with the expected pitting, however, the metal is quite sound. Latch is 11 1/2" overall, 1 1/4"x1" thumb press, the bar is about 5 3/4" long, the bar, and staple are plain. I, question if the catch is original to the latch or part of it is missing? Latch comes with bar, catch, and staple. The mid point on the handle has a cross hatch X design. In excellent as found condition.
